Choosing an aircraft COM radio: Garmin, Becker and Trig
Compare aircraft COM-radio requirements by voltage, channel spacing, panel format, audio integration and complete installation scope.
Ask about this requirementThe quick answer
Choose a COM radio by the aircraft and installation requirement before comparing brand names or price. Record the existing radio, supply voltage, available panel space, required channel capability, audio system and intended operating region. Garmin, Becker and Trig offer different models and variants; a shared brand or similar front panel does not establish interchangeability. Confirm the exact variant and approved installation path before ordering.

Define the installation envelope
Measure or obtain the documented panel opening and available depth through the installer. Identify whether the radio is a compact unit, stack unit or remote-controlled arrangement. Record the aircraft electrical supply and the exact existing connectors, tray and antenna information when available. A replacement may need a different installation kit, harness or other supporting equipment; a matching opening is only one selection criterion.
Compare exact models, not an entire brand
Trig publishes different voltage and power requirements for its compact and stack-radio variants, and distinguishes 8.33 kHz-capable models from other versions. Use the current manufacturer specification for each candidate and apply the same questions to Garmin and Becker models. Ask the operator or installer to confirm the channel and regulatory requirement for the intended operation; this guide does not declare one rule applicable to every flight in Israel or abroad. For example, Trig lists the TY91 at 6 W with an 11–33 V supply, while the TY92 is a 16 W, 22–33 V version. Becker publishes the AR6201/6200-series electrical and channel specifications in its data sheet. Garmin describes the GTR 205 as a COM radio and the GNC 215 as a NAV/COM radio. These are examples of why power, voltage, functions and the complete variant must be compared separately.
Include the audio path and full quotation
State the audio-panel/intercom model, headsets and microphone type and any navigation or frequency-transfer integration required. A connector adaptor alone may not resolve electrical or functional differences. Request a scope that separates radio, installation kit, accessories, documentation and installation work. Ask for the technical differences between alternatives rather than treating them as interchangeable.
What to compare
| Compare | Record for each candidate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical supply | Supported voltage and power requirement | Variant-specific electrical suitability |
| Channel capability | Exact model and required channel spacing | Similar model names may differ |
| Installation | Opening, depth, tray and harness | A unit price may omit installation items |
| Audio/interfaces | Intercom, microphone, connected equipment | Integration must be checked as a system |

Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing wattage without checking voltage
- Assuming a brand name guarantees the same channel capability
- Budgeting for the radio without the integration items

Common questions
Which brand is best?
The useful comparison is between exact models that satisfy the aircraft, operating and integration requirements. Start with those requirements and compare the complete offer.
Does fitting the same opening prove compatibility?
No. Voltage, connectors, audio interfaces, antenna requirements and the approved installation data also need review.
